Case Study: Police – Leadership Development Framework
Situation
A National Steering Committee with a broad scope of regional concerns needed to develop a national leadership competency framework for policing.
Challenges
The client needed to obtain buy-in from a large group of senior executives on a national approach to leadership development for an industry that traditionally thinks and acts regionally more than nationally.
Approach
The Collaborative Transformation™ team designed and delivered a collaborative workshop for 30 participants to help the steering committee review and adopt a national strategy and work plan for the implementation of a leadership competency framework. Participants defined the national role in this endeavour and discussed its value proposition. The intention question that guided the collaborative discussions on how best to achieve the required outcomes was:
“What do we need to do to prepare leaders to face the challenges of policing in the future?”
The workgroup identified leadership competencies to build, train and educate better leaders. They identified success strategies and produced recommendations on how best to proceed. By the end of the session, participants were clear on the roles and responsibilities of the steering committee and the variety of supporting roles that would be required to succeed.
Outcome
At the end of the day the client obtained total buy-in and commitment from the Steering Committee to implement a national strategy for leadership development. Participants were confident in the recommendations of this workgroup. Everyone felt that the right path forward had been clarified and was ready for implementation.
